Stop griping about losing jobs to China. It’s difficult enough to keep manufacturing in the U.S. when qualified manufacturing people seem few and far between. To make matters worse, there are few apprentice programs for machinists, tells one L.A-based manufacturer. Most other developed countries have plenty of machinist-apprentice programs. What happened in California?
One solution to the problem, according to Bal-Seal Inc., Foothill Ranch, Calif., has been to establish an in-house training program for machinists. Another solution has been to open a plant in another state where machinists are more plentiful. In this case, Colorado.
What innovative way has your company solved its skilled-labor shortage?
